Is Your People Strategy Ready for Your Organisation’s Next Stage of Growth?
Oomoosa Insights | People & Organisation
Growth is exciting. It brings new opportunities, new customers and the possibility of achieving things that once seemed out of reach.
But growth also exposes weaknesses.
Processes that once worked begin to slow down. Leaders become stretched. Roles become unclear. Communication becomes harder. High-performing employees can become frustrated. And the organisation can find itself moving faster than its people and culture can comfortably support.
This is where a strong people strategy becomes critical.
Growth is more than numbers
When organisations think about growth, the conversation often focuses on revenue, customers, technology and market share. People can become an afterthought yet every strategy ultimately depends on people being able to execute it. If an organisation doubles in size but doesn’t develop the leadership, skills, structures and culture required to support that growth, the organisation can quickly find itself carrying the complexity of a much larger business without the capability to operate like one.
The question therefore isn’t simply:
“How do we grow?”
It is:
“What will our people and organisation need to become in order to grow well?”
Five questions leaders should be asking
1. Do we have the right capabilities?
The skills that helped an organisation succeed yesterday may not be the skills it needs tomorrow. Growth often creates new requirements around leadership, technology, customer experience, commercial capability and organisational management. Understanding those future capabilities early allows organisations to develop or acquire them deliberately.
2. Are our leaders ready?
Leadership becomes increasingly important as organisations grow. Founders and senior leaders who could personally oversee everything at 20 employees cannot operate in the same way at 100 or 500. Growth requires leaders who can delegate, develop others, manage complexity and create clarity.
3. Does our structure still work?
Organisational structures often evolve informally. People take on additional responsibilities. Teams emerge. Reporting lines change. Decisions become unclear. Eventually, the organisation can become dependent on individuals rather than a structure designed to support performance. Growth is an opportunity to ask: “Is the way we are organised helping people succeed?”
4. Are we protecting our culture?
Culture can be easy to maintain when everyone knows everyone. As organisations grow, that changes. New employees bring different experiences, expectations and ways of working. Leaders become further removed from day-to-day employee experiences. Culture therefore needs to be understood, communicated and actively reinforced.
5. Are we developing the people we already have?
Hiring isn’t always the answer. There may already be significant potential within the organisation. The challenge is identifying it, developing it and giving people opportunities to take on greater responsibility. A strong people strategy doesn’t simply ask: “Who do we need to hire?”
It also asks: “Who could our existing people become?”
Growth should strengthen an organisation not simply make it bigger
Sustainable growth happens when commercial ambition and organisational capability develop together. That means thinking about: People. Leadership. Culture. Structure. Capability. Purpose.
When these elements are aligned, people are better equipped to contribute and organisations are better equipped to adapt. At Oomoosa, we believe organisational growth should create the conditions for people to contribute, develop and thrive. Because the goal isn’t simply to build a bigger organisation.
It’s to build a stronger one.
